I am the son of August Hansen. He passed away 7 Nov 2002. I’ve been looking for info on the 286th and thank you very much for taking the time to put what you have online. Don’t know what he meant by “shtopbipes” under his photo. I would like to find more info on the 286th. Any leads would be appreciated.
    Thanks again.

It’s nice to hear from you, Richard. I’ve bee thinking “shtobpipes” translated to “stovepipes.” Some kind of Supply unit joke, perhaps lost to time….

More info to come re: 286th.

I am the daughter of Louis Gerken, 286th, Company C. He is 88 and only recently started talking about the war after his oral history was taken for the Veterans History Project in DC. I appreciate all you’ve done to put this site together. Many years ago, my father did write his own small book on his personal experiences in the 286th. Please keep me on your mailing list if you have one.

Hi, Valerie. It’s great to hear your father was able to share his oral history for the Veterans History Project. Are there any copies of his book available?
